La naturalización es el proceso por el que se concede la ciudadanía estadounidense a un residente permanente legal tras cumplir los requisitos establecidos por el Congreso en la Ley de Inmigración y Nacionalidad (INA). La elección de convertirse en ciudadano estadounidense es una decisión muy importante.

However, keep in mind that becoming a US Citizen carries benefits and also responsibilities. To become a citizen, applicants are required to complete and submit Form N-400, Application for U.S. Citizenship, and must meet the eligibility requirements set by the law.

Los requisitos generales para ser ciudadano estadounidense son:

Tener al menos 18 años.

Ser residente permanente (tener una tarjeta verde) durante al menos 5 años.

Demostrar que se ha residido de forma continuada en Estados Unidos durante al menos 5 años inmediatamente antes de la fecha en que se presente el formulario N-400. If applicant does not comply with this, the topic can be discussed with the attorney.

Demostrar que ha estado físicamente presente en los Estados Unidos durante al menos 30 meses de los 5 años inmediatamente anteriores a la fecha de presentación del formulario N-400.

Demostrar que se ha vivido durante al menos 3 meses en el estado o distrito de USCIS donde se solicita. Los estudiantes pueden solicitar la naturalización en el lugar donde van a la escuela o donde vive su familia.

Ser una persona de buen carácter moral.

Demostrar apego a los principios e ideales de la Constitución de los Estados Unidos.

Ser capaz de leer, escribir y hablar inglés básico.

Tener un conocimiento básico de la historia y el gobierno de los Estados Unidos (educación cívica).

Jurar lealtad a los Estados Unidos.

¿Qué documento necesito para solicitar la nacionalidad?

All U.S. citizenship applicants are required to provide supporting documents. The documents that are necessary depend on each applicant’s situation. Applicants submit the supporting documents at different stages of the naturalization process. Let’s see.

  • Prueba de la condición de titular de la tarjeta verde (residente permanente)
  • Pago de la tasa de solicitud
  • Prueba del estado civil actual
  • Prueba de identidad
  • Prueba del servicio militar, si procede.
  • Prueba de discapacidad médica
  • Solicitud de reducción de tasas
  • Solicitud de exención de tasas
  • Solicitud de representación en la entrevista de naturalización
  • Registros de viajes
  • Prueba del estado civil actual y de la terminación de sus matrimonios anteriores, si los hubiera
  • Prueba de la terminación de los matrimonios anteriores de su cónyuge, si los hay
  • Comprobante de pago de impuestos del Servicio de Impuestos Internos (IRS)
  • Prueba de que ha mantenido la residencia permanente en Estados Unidos
  • Registros de encuentros anteriores con las fuerzas del orden

What is the current naturalization wait time?

The naturalization processing time, from the time you file your citizenship application to when you attend the Oath of Allegiance ceremony, is currently between 18.5 and 24 months. Unless you have a complex case, we file your case online, which helps to expedite the process.

¿Cuánto cuesta solicitar la naturalización?

Together with our minimum fee of $500 (the fee may change if your case is complex) with the current government filing fee is $1225, including $640 for processing and $85 for biometrics services. Military applicants are exempt from both the application filing fee and the biometrics fee. Applicants aged 75 and older are exempt from the biometrics fee (see our detailed guide to naturalization costs).
