A key step in the Green Card Consular Petition is the interview. Once you have submitted all the evidence, you will be required to attend an interview at a U.S. consulate in your home country. For this purpose, you will receive a notice with the time and location of your interview. This notice will arrive online through the NVC website. The interview may be located in a different city from where you live. Therefore, careful planning is the best strategy. Before the interview, you will also need to undergo a medical exam at a clinic accepted by the USCIS or the Department of State. chosen by the U.S.
You may want to travel overseas with your family. Well, only the applicants are allowed to attend the interview. However, it is a good practice to have the petitioner close to the interview site in case something comes up. Additionally, be sure to check the application procedures on the consulate website.
Before the Interview Plan and Take Safety Measures
If this is the first time you visit the city where the interview will take place, plan ahead. You should be aware of scams and other crimes in the physical vicinity of a U.S. consulate. It is a usual practice of criminals to attempt to exploit people by soliciting money or information in exchange for speedy processing times. This is only a form of scam. You should only follow the Consular website instructions. On the day of the interview, you only need to enter the consulate and present your forms and documents to the clerk. They will verify your information on their system and give further instructions. Finally, expect delays and lines, many people will be scheduled for the same day.
During the Interview
To smooth the interview process, review all your documents, supporting papers, forms, waivers, or anything that requires some explanation. During the interview, the consular officer will ask questions that probably duplicate the questions on their forms. This is normal. A prior review of everything will make things easier. However, remember that if you are unsure about an answer, you should say so rather than guess. Keep in mind that the purpose of the interview is to make sure that you are telling the truth about your application.
After the Interview
Once the interview is completed the consular officer will indicate to you that a final determination will be send to you by email. If your visa is approved, you may need to return to the U.S. consulate to collect it, or the consulate may send it to you by courier. If you receive your papers on the mail, you will receive your passport stamped with the immigrant visa (to come back to the US) and a closed envelope visa packet. Do not open that packet. Once you arrive at the airport, a Customs and Border Protection will open the envelope. Finally, keep in mind that your visa probably will last for six months, which means that you need to travel to the U.S. within that period.
